New Sphynx families are often nervous about bathing. The good news: it is a calm 15-minute routine once you and your cat get the hang of it.
How often? 🛁
Every 1 to 2 weeks is plenty for most Sphynx cats. Bathing too often dries the skin and actually makes oil build-up worse.
What you need
- A sink or small tub with warm (not hot) water
- A gentle, fragrance-free pet shampoo
- Two soft towels, one for washing and one for wrapping
- A few treats for afterwards
The routine, step by step
- Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water before you bring the cat in.
- Wet the body with a cup or sprayer, avoiding the face.
- Massage in a small amount of shampoo, paying attention to the chest, armpits and around the nails.
- Rinse thoroughly. Leftover shampoo irritates skin.
- Wrap immediately in a warm towel. Sphynx cats lose heat fast.
- Treats, cuddles, done.
Between baths 👂
Wipe ears weekly with a vet-approved cleaner and trim nails every couple of weeks. Watch the skin: healthy Sphynx skin feels like warm suede.
